Three formats of cricket and popular tournaments

To get into cricket betting, it helps to understand the three main formats first, because the type of betting differs across each one.

T20: The fastest format — every ball counts in a match of just twenty overs. In tournaments like BPL and IPL, odds in T20 matches shift quickly with each over. Because BPL is Bangladesh's domestic franchise tournament, it is especially popular among local cricket fans.

ODI (One Day International): In this fifty-over format the pace of the match is comparatively slower, so batting partnerships and bowler economy rates play a role in betting decisions. ICC World Cups and bilateral series are played in the ODI format.

Test: In a five-day match, a draw is a possible result, so there are three betting options — Team A wins, Team B wins, or draw. In Test cricket, pitch behaviour and weather conditions influence what you bet on.

The T20 World Cup and ICC tournaments generate the most activity among Bangladeshi bettors, as Bangladesh Tigers take part in those matches directly.

life Betting Markets for T20 and ODI Matches

Football and other sports — a comparison with cricket

In football, a match winner bet has three possible outcomes — Team A wins, draw, or Team B wins. In T20 and ODI cricket a draw is not possible, so the market is limited to two outcomes. That makes things a bit simpler for the bettor.

In football many markets are built around goal counts, such as total goals over/under. The same idea applies to cricket using run counts — predicting the total runs in a set number of overs or across a full innings.

In other sports like Kabaddi, tennis or badminton the betting rules are different — those markets involve winning sets or games. Cricket betting still accounts for the largest share in Bangladesh.

The key difference is match length and betting window. Football lasts 90 minutes, while a Test match lasts five days — meaning there are far more in-play betting opportunities.

A guide to popular betting markets

Each of the markets below lets you bet on a different aspect of a match. Understanding what each one covers makes betting much easier.

Match Winner

Betting on which team will win the entire match is the most common type of bet. Example: if you back Team A to win and they do, you get a payout; if they do not win, you lose the bet.

Easiest to start with

Toss Market

You can bet on which team will win the toss — a single event that is settled before the match starts. This market closes before play begins. Example: if you back Team B to win the toss and they do, you get a payout.

Before the match starts

Top Batsman

This market involves betting on which batsman will score the most runs in the match. Example: if you back a specific batsman from Team A to top-score and they do, you win the bet.

Individual performance

Total Runs Over/Under

This market asks you to predict whether the total runs scored will be above (over) or below (under) a set number — essentially a forecast of the match scoreline.

Score-based

First Wicket of the Innings

This market depends only on the start of the innings — at what run total will the first wicket fall. Bowlers' form plays an important role here.

Bowling-dependent

Multi Bet (multiple selections)

Multiple matches or markets are combined into a single bet. If all selections are correct, the payout multiplies; if even one is wrong, the entire bet is lost. See the next section for an odds example.

Higher risk and potential return

A simple example of a multi bet

Bet on three separate matches: selection 1 at odds 1.40, selection 2 at 1.50, selection 3 at 1.60 — combined odds come to 1.40 × 1.50 × 1.60 = 3.36 (approximately). So a ৳100 bet returns ৳336 if all three are correct. But if any one selection is wrong, the entire ৳100 is lost.

Learn to read odds — all three formats together

Being able to calculate a possible return from the odds shown is the most important skill in betting. There are three main formats in use: decimal, fractional and American. life generally uses decimal format, but understanding all three means you can work with any platform.

Format Odds for Team A to win Return on ৳500 bet
Decimal 2.50 ৳1,250 (৳750 profit + original ৳500)
Fractional 3/2 Same — 3/2 means ৳3 profit for every ৳2 staked
American (+) +150 Same — +150 means ৳150 profit on a ৳100 bet

So if Team A wins, a ৳500 bet returns ৳1,250; if Team A loses, ৳500 is lost — all three formats represent the same return.

Understanding odds for the favourite

If Team B is the favourite, the odds will be lower — for example decimal 1.25 = fractional 1/4 = American -400. -400 means you need to stake ৳400 to make ৳100 profit. So a ৳500 bet returns ৳625 (profit ৳125).

Quick decimal odds calculation

Total return = stake × odds

Profit = total return − original stake

Example: ৳1,000 bet, odds 2.75

→ Total return ৳2,750 (profit ৳1,750)

American minus (-) odds: shows how much you need to stake to make ৳100 profit.

During the match — how in-play betting works

In-play or live betting is the option to place bets after a match has already started. In cricket this is especially useful, because odds shift with every over and every wicket that falls.

Consider this example: if Team A gets off to a good start in the powerplay, their odds to win will shorten — meaning they become the favourite. Conversely, if two wickets fall mid-innings, Team B's odds may shorten. These changes are reflected directly in the live odds.

Staying focused in live betting matters, because a given market is only open for a short window. Odds can change before the new batsman even reaches the crease after a wicket falls. This rapid movement is what sets in-play betting apart from regular pre-match betting.

On a betting exchange you also have two options — BACK and LAY. BACK means betting in favour of an outcome; LAY means betting against it. Example: backing Team A at decimal 2.50 with a ৳1,000 stake wins you ৳1,500 profit if they win (before commission), or costs you ৳1,000 if they do not. Laying Team A at the same odds means your liability is ৳1,500; if Team A does not win you collect ৳1,000, but if they do win you pay ৳1,500.

Some useful tips before you start betting

  • Start with one market. The match winner market is the most straightforward — beginning there will help you get comfortable reading odds.
  • Betting is entertainment — keep it within a set portion of your daily spending and do not go beyond that limit.
  • Multi bets may look attractive, but remember that missing even one selection means losing everything — it is better not to go beyond two selections when you are just starting out.
  • With in-play betting, do not rush — watch a few matches first without placing bets so you understand how odds move.
  • To understand the rules around betting, read the Terms and Conditions — bonus wagering requirements and other conditions are explained in detail there.
  • To learn more about playing responsibly, visit the Responsible Gaming page — it has guidance on keeping yourself safe.

Keep in mind

Betting is never a guaranteed way to earn — every bet carries the risk of a loss. Treating it as entertainment keeps the experience better.

Frequently asked questions — Cricket Betting

In T20, matches end quickly so odds shift frequently, and there are runs-per-over target markets for each over. In ODI, there are more betting opportunities spread across the full 50 overs. In Test cricket, a draw is a valid result, so the match winner market has three options and bets can run for much longer.

Yes, in-play or live betting is available on BPL matches. After the match starts, odds update with every wicket and over. However, some markets close after a certain point, so placing your bet on time matters.

Decimal 2.50 means you get back ৳2.50 for every ৳1 staked (if you win). So a ৳500 bet returns ৳1,250 — that includes ৳750 profit plus your original ৳500. If you lose, you only lose that ৳500.

A multi bet pays out only if every selection is correct. If two out of three selections are right and one is wrong, the entire stake is lost — there is no partial win. That is why it is recommended to start with fewer selections when placing multi bets.

If a match is cancelled or left incomplete due to rain or any other reason, bets are generally settled according to the rules. If a minimum number of overs has been completed, the result may be decided by the D/L method. Rules can vary by market, so read the Terms and Conditions to be sure.
